| ROY'S MARATHON TRIBUTE TO LATE WIFE |
|
| A Shropshire man has completed a marathon cycle challenge to raise money for a county hospice in memory of his late wife. |
| Roy Bazeley of Hodnet, cycled 82 miles from Worksop to Sutton on Sea on August 30th in under six hours. He is now aiming to collect up to
£500 from family and friends for the Shropshire and Mid Wales Hospice. |
| The bike ride was organised by the British Heart Foundation and organisers gave special permission for Roy to complete the ride in memory of
his wife, Cathy, the former deputy head teacher of High Ercall Primary School. |
| The bike ride was made all the more difficult because on the day of the event Roy woke up with pain from a stiff neck. |
| He said: "Fortunately the two friends accompanying me on the ride were both physiotherapists so I had the benefit of free
treatment by the side of the road every 20 miles or so" |
| "I set off with 33 riders and 25 riders completed the course. the back-up was excellent, with homemade flapjacks also every 20 miles
along the way and an enthusiastic reception at the end, including beer, chips and sandwiches." |
| The bike ride was a new challenge for Roy who took time out from one of his favourite pastimes, cycling, while he was caring for his wife.
It has renewed his passion for cycling and already he has registered on a 50-mile bike ride in the autumn and a possible 100-mile bike ride next year. |
| Roy added: "I don't know exactly how much I've raised yet, but it's definitely hundreds of pounds." |
| "About £200 funds a bed for a day and that would be a worthwhile achievement I think." |
